DME Lab Locker Room Production

A great deal of production can be accommodated in the architecture studio when students are not working on deadlines. Fortunately the [R]ed[U]x Lab team working on the DME Lab project were able to utilize the studio space to assemble and prepare their components. Keeping track of components, laying out joinery, and applying finishes require a great deal of work space. Sometimes it seems as though the team was having too much fun...

Digital Media Experience Lab Locker Room

One of the projects the [R]ed[U]x Lab team had the privilege to participate in was the renovation of a space at the back of the Digital Media Experience Lab. Converting it from a small office to a locker room for the facility staff as well as students from the Masters of Digital Media program. Storing everything from coats and backpacks to microprocessors and printing filament, the facility had to securely store materials, make accessible resources for the lab, and inspire a sense of creative innovation. The [R]ed[U]x Lab team led by Liam, Arnel, and Erik pulled off a fairly ambitious proposal.

Bata Shoe Museum's Window Celebrating Canada's 150th Anniversary

Once again the Department of Architectural Science through [R]ed[U]x Lab have been asked to design, detail, and deliver on a window display that celebrates Canada's 150th anniversary. This was a difficult task given the benchmark established by the current installation, foot[age], a collaboration between Architectural Science and Interior Design students, led by [R]ed[U]x alumni and DFZ technicians Fil Tisler and Naveed Khan.

This initiative is led by Lisa Boulatova with John Zhang and Liam Hall with the support of students in the Department of Architectural Science. This design draws upon the provincial flowers as a unifying element wrapping around the prominent window. Composed of an array of 3D printed shoes, the installation undulates beyond a subtle backdrop that has been evolving for the past few months. This looks to be one of the [R]ed[U]x Lab's first projects that use the medium beyond prototyping and instead serving as the actual output.

This past year has been quite intense despite the dearth of updates and posts. With the end of the academic year, the [R]ed[U]x Lab has been literally building up a few projects that continue to attest to the Department of Architectural Science's commitment to provide students experiential learning opportunities and make connections to the greater community. This summer will be quite busy with two notable projects right off the start: the Bata Shoe Museum window celebrating Canada's 150th anniversary and the City of Toronto's Parklet project.

Design work on the Parklet TO continues!

Where traditionally it is simply a roped off area of street where cars park, used for restaurant seating or as a public space, the Ryerson students chose to design a flexible bench-like seating that leave room for customization for future locations and uses. 

Working with the Toronto authorities as well as the police force, the team has been iterating designs for a few weeks.

The team decided to create a parametrically undulating surface, modeling the process using T-Splines and Rhino.

[R]ed[U]x Lab project redesigns Toronto's Streetscape

[R]ed[U]x Lab has most recently been tasked with the design of a parklet on the intersection of Elm Street and Yonge Street by the Yonge Street BIA. Being the first parklet in Toronto, the team is able to fully redefine the typology of such a space. Here are some sneak peek initial brainstorming ideas the team came up with, with more imagery to come soon!

Aqueous: Night Market 2016 Cart

The [R]ed[U]x Lab Night Market Cart 2016 was a big hit this year and showcased a great deal of inventiveness by the students on the team in their reuse of materials from the studio renovation currently underway in the Architecture building. It was quite a rewarding event for yet another generation of students from the department in the execution of the design.
