Once again the Department of Architectural Science through [R]ed[U]x Lab have been asked to design, detail, and deliver on a window display that celebrates Canada's 150th anniversary. This was a difficult task given the benchmark established by the current installation, foot[age], a collaboration between Architectural Science and Interior Design students, led by [R]ed[U]x alumni and DFZ technicians Fil Tisler and Naveed Khan.
This initiative is led by Lisa Boulatova with John Zhang and Liam Hall with the support of students in the Department of Architectural Science. This design draws upon the provincial flowers as a unifying element wrapping around the prominent window. Composed of an array of 3D printed shoes, the installation undulates beyond a subtle backdrop that has been evolving for the past few months. This looks to be one of the [R]ed[U]x Lab's first projects that use the medium beyond prototyping and instead serving as the actual output.
Below are samples of the initial proposal to the Bata Shoe Museum. Special thanks to Remi for the excellent initial photos to work from in the montages.

Lithoform in the Media
As the winter draws to an end, so too does the Lithoform Winter Station by [R]ed[U]x Lab's team led by Aris, Remi, and Teresa. Though an entirely new set of challenges beset this team, they were able to assemble a great project that received attention from local and international sites alike.

Winter Stations 2016: Lithoform
Congratulations to the selected winners of the 2016 Winter Stations! This year Ryerson University's Department of Architectural Science will have TWO teams, one in the academic category and another that was successful in the International Competition Category. Congratulations to Calvin and Victor in the Master of Architecture program!
The Department is also pleased to be participating with the other distinguished design institutions with its entry, Lithoform designed by [R]ed[U]x Lab veterans Remi Carreiro and Aris Peci. Let's hope that this team can match the success of last year's Snow Cone installation from the Department!
Congratulations to both Ryerson teams and we look forward to seeing their work in the next month!

Toronto Design Offsite 2016: 325 Church Street: STRATATONE

Society has become defined by webs of communication. Never before has a message been as widely distributed as has recently been allowed by modern technology. With this distribution comes distortion. A message becomes more abstracted the more people pass it along; an inevitable case of broken telephone. Stratatone replicates this concept. A pattern (the message) should be simple to repeat, yet as the commotion of those around it increases it becomes distorted; moving, growing, shrinking.
The project consists of two stepper motors per drawing surface. A base code runs the pattern which in a perfectly silent space would remain constant. As people traverse the surrounding area, noise peaks amplify the form and create a unique image over the course of time.

Stomata: Respiration Video Montage
Though the images that were taken by Remi were already quite seductive and served to highlight Stomata's intricacy and density, the video he quickly compiled showcases the respiration effects that were present in the design.
As the CO2 sensor array mounted atop the room fed signals to vary the amount of oxygen pumped into the the Stomata membrane, a parallel pneumatic system highlighted the respiration through the inhaling and exhaling of the plastic ballasts.

Stomata: The Effect
Those unable to attend the Stomata Installation at the 2014 Nuit Blanche in the Bata Shoe Museum missed out quite an experience, but here are some images that Remi took that documents some of the ambiance.
Stomata: The Details
In this set of images Remi showcases some of the nuanced detail work that the volunteers were instrumental in assembling.
Stomata: Setting Up The Darkness
In this batch of Remi images, you can see Stomata set up just as the sun is about to set and getting ready for Nuit Blanche 2014 to begin.
Stomata: Preparation
Here is the start of a series of images taken by [R]ed[U]x Lab's resident photographer extraordinaire, Remi. This first batch is of the installation at the Bata Shoe Museum just prior to opening at the 2014 Nuit Blanche. It is also nice to see the installation with the lights on and the shadows projected on the floor - something the general public didn't get a sense of.
Take note in the last two images you can see the respiration volumes in the inhaling and exhaling conditions.
