The Preparations the Night Before

Here are a few better images of the [R]ed[U]x Lab team as the deadline for Grow Op 2014 approached. Thanks again to the energy and enthusiasm from the volunteers especially at this time of the academic year. Special thanks go to Lauren for taking the photos!

Here is the late shift all posing and assuming the working positions:

Naveed putting the finishing touches on the acrylic stalactite...

Ariel looking determined to make the acrylic connect properly...

Johnathan hanging on the infrastructure?

Matt precariously holding the pieces up...

Rachel and John watching Naveed...

A dramatic image showcasing the incredible number of modules made for the installation...

Rachel putting up a few units...

Apparently as the tallest person, Matt does the installation in the hard to reach areas while everyone watches...

With the pieces coming down to eye level, it looks like Gary almost posed for this...

Laura maintaining calm while the assembly continues in the background...

Hyebin admiring the work above...

Ariel finds your lack of faith [in the acrylic structure] disturbing, Lauren...

John making his the most of his "hood" cred...

The nearly complete piece... too bad visitors wouldn't be able to see the interesting shadow play of the piece on the white walls...

A Late Night Welcomes the Darkness

Yesterday was quite a production event as the install continued with a great turn out from first years. As the evening drew closer and the sun began to set, the UV lights really began to show the overall intent of the project.

The fabrication and assembly team toiling on the modules in the Architectural Science Department...

Meanwhile back at the Gladstone Hotel, the installation continues...

The assembly begins to create a dense network to insert the lights and plants...

And then the UV lights begin to shine as darkness falls...

More to come as the event draws nearer!

Design and Production Commences on Grow Op 2014

Despite the opening of the Grow Op 2014 show coinciding with the frenetic and stressful end of term at Ryerson University's Department of Architectural Science, members of the [R]ed[U]x Lab are always up for a challenge. After all, what better way to relieve studio stress than breathing in laser cutter fumes or manual labor? Of course pizza tends to make manual labor worthwhile...

In addition to the laser cut acrylic infrastructure, the group has also been preparing clippings of aggressive ivy to integrate into the design. Unfortunately the initial idea of using spider plants, Chlorophytum, had to change given the physiology and desired tropism behaviours for this project.
