[R]ed[U]x Lab Design Explorations for the Digital Media Experience Lab

Thanks to the coordinated efforts of the management of Ryerson University's Digital Media Experience Lab (Namir Ahmed and Fangmin Wang) and the Master of Digital Media program (Michael Carter), another [R]ed[U]x Lab team led by Cathy have proposed a design of some storage within a feature wall for one of the Student Learning Centre's most prominent spaces. The design concept entitled "Trichotomy". Given the popularity and steady activity of the space, the design will have to be broken into two phases to ensure the primary storage is installed followed by the accent features of the overhead display areas. The team is currently looking to refine the design and explore materials that would complement the newest addition to the Ryerson University campus.

Photokeratitis Initial Design and Play

[R]ed[U]x Lab is thrilled to be part of the 2015 Toronto Design Offsite Festival especially with its opportunity to install at the Junction's Cornerstone window. As you can see here, the group had some initial ideas involving play with light and shadow while experimenting with egg-crating and heat shrink membrane.

Fortunately with the combination of support from experienced [R]ed[U]x Lab members, Jeff and Steph, leading the project and the Design Fabrication Zone providing access to bench space at Ryerson University's School of Interior Design overseen by R]ed[U]x Lab alum, Jordan, the team was able to try out their ideas with ease.

Ryerson Today did a quick spot on the Night Market carts from last week's event showcasing both the work from the [R]ed[U]x Lab in Architectural Science and the groups from the School of Interior Design.


At the same time, another article from (appropriately named) TorontoIsAwesome.com gave credit to the upcycled serving modules the team developed as it declared:

"BEST SERVING DISH – The boys from Cote De Boeuf really know their meat. So clearly this Mini Corned Beef Sandwich stacked high (and I mean HIGGGGH) really got everyone in the crowd motor running.  Best of all: it was served on a LED wooden light plank!  Neat."

It's All About Community

As much as everyone would like to think the upcoming Night Market event will be about the extraordinary culinary experience or the intriguing design of the various carts, the reality is that tonight's event is all about contributing to a greater cause and helping out The Stop.  Both as a vehicle to raise awareness and funds, the event is yet another way everyone can help make Toronto better.  Some of the faculty members at Ryerson University had a chance to share their thoughts on their respective teams' works.

Loading the Cart for the Big Night

In order to secure the carts before the big Stop Night Market event, the organizers had to collect all the carts via truck and consolidate them in the evening at the Stop facility at the Wychwood Barns.  Along with our colleagues' carts from Interior Design, the [R]ed[U]x Lab team's cart was carefully packed away in the rental truck. At the end of the day, a good time was had by all... a little bit of sweat and effort is worth the benefits that tomorrow's Stop Night Market will reap.

At the Interior Design Parking Lot

Though today's temperatures were stifling and unbearable, the [R]ed[U]x Lab team made several trips back and forth between the Interior Design and the Architectural Science buildings carrying bulky and heavy items.  Fortunately the team was able to assemble all the cart components in the parking lot while also protecting it from the possibilities of a light shower.  While awaiting the Stop organizing team's pickup in the parking lot it was quite muggy; had it not been for Interior Design Professor Lorella DiCinto allowing the team to rest in the air conditioned workshop, it might have been a bit taxing on the team. Once again while sitting in the parking lot, the team's cart design elicited comments and smiles by the general public walking through the downtown core.
