Bata Shoe Museum 150th Window Video

After all the celebrations calmed down, the team behind the Bata Shoe Museum installation for Canada's 150th anniversary had a moment to document their work including a succinct video on Ryerson University's experiential learning and city-building opportunities.

Terrena at the AGO

Not to be outdone by its showing at the Gladstone Hotel at the GrowOp 2016 exhibition, Terrena was asked to be displayed at the Art Gallery of Ontario. As the first time [R]ed[U]x Lab had a piece presented in this esteemed venue, Cathy and her team ensured the entire Terrena installation could be redeployed.

Congratulations to the team for the great effort in bringing the work to such a high profile platform!

Cumulus Canopy Intro to the Space

In the hubbub of fabrication and activity within the winter term, part of the [R]ed[U]x Lab led by Brandon took on the Chang School installation in the Vari Engineering building for the second annual Chang School Talks at Ryerson University. As a veteran member of R]ed[U]x Lab on several previous projects, Brandon had a limited time frame, budget, and resources but his experience and leadership on the project made for a great feature installation for the descent into the main activity space.

Snow Cone Assemblage Continues

As stated earlier, that the installation team were able to put the Snow Cone up within the day and in such freezing cold temperatures is an incredible feat. Taking a look at the apparel, it is evident that the team either decided to wear multiple winter wardrobes worth of clothing, or that blankets are making a comeback... it was that cold.

Note how the petals have different aperture conditions based upon the orientation to the winds... perhaps that was one of the reasons why the team got the Snow Cone up so quickly.

Photokeratitis: The Assembly Continues

Once the main framework of CNC'ed contoured "ribs" were set in place, the [R]ed[U]x Lab team proceeded to add the laser cut elements that blurred the edges. The idea behind the laser cut elements was to find a way to generate a surface that both took on shadows but cast them as well as diffused the edges of the contoured pieces. As the design developed the laser cut elements were cut using light paper so that as air moved across the display, the shadows created by the ribs as well as the shadows produced by the installation would have another layer of movement.

Once again the [R]ed[U]x Lab is fortunate to have Remi serve as the unofficial photographer for an installation and it is clear that he has continued the tradition of making the projects look even better than what they were in reality with nothing other than a good photographer's eye... and nice photographic equipment certainly doesn't hurt.

A Late Night Welcomes the Darkness

Yesterday was quite a production event as the install continued with a great turn out from first years. As the evening drew closer and the sun began to set, the UV lights really began to show the overall intent of the project.

And then the UV lights begin to shine as darkness falls...
