SOL Interactive Shell - Unit Assembly

 Upon completing the shell structure, the process for the shell units began. These units were painted before being precisely affixed to seamlessly integrate with the structure of the shell.

SOL Interactive Shell - Prototypes

Students collaborated on the development of an interactive shell prototype, utilizing its ability to visually represent the design principles. This method not only helps to get an idea of the full sized project, but it also helps to bring opportunities for any design modifications.

Flummox in Progress

As the team continues developing the design, they have been experimenting and eventually mass-producing the vinyl records into units for tessellation later on in the design. Using the heat gun and routed jig pieces, the team slowly but surely has refined a workflow in generating the materials for the TODO2016 event at Pandemonium.

Additional Initial Sketches of FLUX

It is always a great exercise to compare and contrast what the initial ideas are relative to what the final outcomes are, especially in the realm of design and fabrication. Here are some initial concept sketches that the Flux team developed for their submission to the 2016 Come Up To My Room. Let's hope the team is able to translate their ideas into built reality with a high level of fidelity!

Stomata: The Membrane Arises

After all the countless man-hours put into the cutting and assembly of the parametrically designed membrane of plastic, today marked the installation of the swaths on site at the Bata Shoe Museum. Despite the complexity, it would seem like the team had everything organized well as the majority was installed relatively quickly.

Stomata Prototyping

The prototyping of the Stomata components looks to be promising. This project will be dealing with pneumatics so the components will have to connect to a structure in order to retain its integrity. The [R]ed[U]x Lab team has always tried to expand its portfolio of techniques and explore new options for their design work. The Stomata project looks to be an interesting examination of the new, as seen in some of the flexible plastics and pneumatic technologies, as well as evolving techniques such as the tessellation and UV lights.
