Photokeratitis: The Assembly Continues

Once the main framework of CNC'ed contoured "ribs" were set in place, the [R]ed[U]x Lab team proceeded to add the laser cut elements that blurred the edges. The idea behind the laser cut elements was to find a way to generate a surface that both took on shadows but cast them as well as diffused the edges of the contoured pieces. As the design developed the laser cut elements were cut using light paper so that as air moved across the display, the shadows created by the ribs as well as the shadows produced by the installation would have another layer of movement.

After having completed the full scale mock-up in the Department of Architectural Science, the [R]ed[U]x Lab team proceeded to bring the pieces over to Cornerstone at the Junction and begin the initial install. Once again it was a coordinated effort by students from 1st to 4th year lending their time and hands on the project that made it successful. One can see from the photos that it was a very organized and relatively quick install.














Mock Up Assembly

The adage "Think twice, cut once" is something the [R]ed[U]x Lab team completely embraces. Throughout the group's formation, the 1:1 mock-ups are often installed in the atria of the Department of Architectural Science at Ryerson University. This allows the team to identify any missing pieces, gaps in the production process, as well as understand the design at a full scale.

The team led by second and third years had a great deal of support from enthusiastic and invaluable student volunteers including [R]ed[U]x Lab veterans and energetic first year students.










More Photokeratitis Experimentation

As the Photokeratitis Cornerstone Window install team had access and the ability to experiment with form and techniques through the Design Fabrication Zone, they were empowered to go beyond heat shrink membrane and even try variations on the design scheme with vacuum formed modules and resins and textiles in tandem with CNC techniques. Though the end result might not capitalize on these methods, not being restricted in exploring possibilities is something the team does not take lightly - the access to expertise and fabrication resources via the DFZ is critical in Photokeratitis' design development.









Photokeratitis Initial Design and Play

[R]ed[U]x Lab is thrilled to be part of the 2015 Toronto Design Offsite Festival especially with its opportunity to install at the Junction's Cornerstone window. As you can see here, the group had some initial ideas involving play with light and shadow while experimenting with egg-crating and heat shrink membrane.

Fortunately with the combination of support from experienced [R]ed[U]x Lab members, Jeff and Steph, leading the project and the Design Fabrication Zone providing access to bench space at Ryerson University's School of Interior Design overseen by R]ed[U]x Lab alum, Jordan, the team was able to try out their ideas with ease.
