Working onsite for the Stantec Gallery Installation

Here are a few photos of Naveed's work onsite preparing the backdrop for the Stantec Gallery installation. This will be one of the few times [R]ed[U]x Lab will explicitly use colours - let's hope the design decision pays off!

The priming and prepping continues...

The Stantec Gallery team has been very busy and given the fine balance of deadlines (most notably in what has been rumoured to be a rough second year studio), it would seem that the students have been able to get things assembled in a fairly decent rate. 

Here we have a few of the students priming the material including sorting out the contoured profiles and painting the internal structure to blend in with the laser cut cardboard.

As the deadline for the Stantec Gallery work comes together, the workshop at the Department of Architectural Science becomes a hotbed of activity once again...

ING Cart

Coming off the success from last summer's The Stop Night Market Cart, [R]ed[U]x Lab met with various groups to develop interesting projects and exhibition pieces.  One project that emerged was the design of a cart for ING Bank's outreach program on Yonge Street.  The Woodlot cart developed for the Night Market was also displayed during the Celebrate Yonge  event in front of the ING bank during the end of the past summer. With that presence, the organization tasked members of [R]ed[U]x Lab to develop a cart catering to the attention-getting demands of the client while balancing basic functional features such as transportability, deployment, and wear-and-tear.

Best Foot Forward...

As described earlier, though there are already several Nuit Blanche prototypes coming from [R[ed[U]x Lab, a few other projects will be keeping team members busy over the next few weeks and months. One project developed earlier last year is the Stantec Window Gallery proposal entitled "Best Foot Forward".  It is a playful throwback to the building's original use as the McGregor Sock Factory but once again making full use of the Department of Architectural Science's fabrication facilities. This will be a quick turnaround of a project as the [R]ed[U]x Lab just received official confirmation yesterday that it was set to have the install up by the Spring equinox! We will be busy!

The proposal brief is as follows:

"Technological advances have accelerated methods of fabrication that have been instrumental in manufacturing the most ubiquitous of objects. “Best Foot Forward” adopts contemporary fabrication techniques in contrast with its historic context to draw attention to this condition. Playfully deconstructing the building’s heritage through the iconic McGregor Argyle sock, the design showcases the range of contemporary design tools used in design and production. The configuration and material palette of the components serve to draw attention to the window gallery as the shadow and lighting conditions change over the course of the day. The synthesis and contrasts among these elements highlight the innovations and shifts at play in Toronto’s Garment District that continue to embrace design yet continue to step out into a larger spectrum of creative industries."

And the Prototyping Resumes...

After a bit of a hiatus for the end of the Fall term, the New Year, new baby, and new term have taken a bit of adjusting to.  That certainly did not mean that the [R]ed[U]x Lab team went into hibernation! Several new projects have been in development over the past couple of months and here are a few that have come out as prototypes for potential upcoming Nuit Blanche installations.  We wish all the teams good luck as they apply!
